You didn\u2019t necessarily care who was on your email list as long as they joined. You can\u2019t remember a day that didn\u2019t end with a flood of new unsubscribe notices.<\/p>\n<p>This is a clear indicator you\u2019ve collected a list of random contacts who likely don\u2019t care about the content you\u2019re sending. You don\u2019t know these contacts, so the content isn\u2019t personalized for them. The latter is admittedly more attractive.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to funnel the time or money into advertising because here\u2019s a full-fledged list right in front of you. You just have to use your marketing chops to keep the audience on the line.<\/p>\n<p>It sounds simple, but rarely does it work out the way marketers hope. Here are some very convincing reasons against buying an email list.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><b>You have no idea what you\u2019ll get<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the eponymous film, Forrest Gump uttered the classic line, \u201cLife is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you\u2019re going to get.\u201d Buying email lists is like a box of chocolates, too, as you <i>definitely <\/i>don\u2019t know what you\u2019ll get. The seller might have promised an engaged, targeted email list, but we doubt you\u2019ll get it.<\/p>\n<p>You see, quality email marketing services don\u2019t sell email lists. High-quality contacts don\u2019t end up on lists for sale. Instead, you\u2019ve bought a list of strangers. They don\u2019t know you, and you don\u2019t know them. They might never have heard of your brand before, or perhaps some have a passing knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the size of the list you bought, some subscribers might have an affinity for your brand, but most will not. If you missed the rest of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engagebay.com\/blog\/intro-to-email-deliverability\/\">email deliverability series<\/a> (and you should really go back and give it a read if you did), an ISP stands for an internet service provider.<\/p>\n<p>ISPs can block emails within their network to protect their customers. You must have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engagebay.com\/blog\/sender-reputation-email-deliverability\/\">good sender reputation<\/a> for your ISP to continue sending your emails. Purchasing emails is one way of many to tank your sender reputation. (Others include using spam words, mass emailing, and failing to send targeted relevant content.)<\/p>\n<p>Once an ISP blocks you, you could wait weeks or months to get unblocked, depending on the severity of your infraction. That\u2019s a long time to go without furthering your email marketing campaign.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><b>You could get reported for spam<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Purchasing a list of hundreds to thousands of disengaged users raises the risk of them reporting your messages as spam. A spam report here and there won\u2019t hurt your sender reputation, but enough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engagebay.com\/blog\/spam-filters-email-deliverability\/\">spam complaints<\/a> over a long period will tank your email deliverability.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><b>You won\u2019t make as many sales as you think<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The prospect of buying emails is a justifiable business decision to some because you assume you\u2019ll make back what you spent through all those sales. However, you must consider that your new email list is full of strangers.<\/p>\n<p>Why should they purchase your products or services? They don\u2019t know anything about your brand yet. That\u2019s compounded by the fact that you don\u2019t know what to sell them because you\u2019re unaware of their pain points.<\/p>\n<p>Randomly recommending products will further harm your already shaky standing with your audience. You\u2019ll become known as that small business that bought its contacts, which could affect the quality of vendors and partners who want to work with you.<\/p>\n<p>People forget eventually, most of the time, but it\u2019s not worth pulling your reputation underwater just for extraneous contacts that won\u2019t help your email metrics anyway.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><b>You could break consent rules<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We saved what is the most compelling reason to avoid buying contacts for last: GDPR regulations. The General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, became effective in 2018 and protects human rights and privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Your company can be based in America and must still comply with GDPR rules and standards if your customers are outside the US.<\/p>\n<p>GDPR rules apply beyond <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engagebay.com\/marketing\/email-marketing\">email marketing<\/a>, including social media and your website, so you should comply with all. You must have consent to email your audience under the GDPR, and you don\u2019t have that when you buy your email list.<\/p>\n<p>None of those contacts consented to join your list; they were transferred to your list when you bought it. Customize your landing pages well<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A landing page is often the first destination on your website a lead sees, so it must make a good impression. Rewrite the copy, taking on a less salesy approach and writing in a benefits-focused manner.<\/p>\n<p>Break up long paragraphs, as it\u2019s difficult to read them, let alone skim them. Add bullet points and lists, and use subheads if needed.<\/p>\n<p>Incorporate media, especially high-res photos of your product and video demonstrations. Use CTAs, either links or buttons or perhaps a mix.<\/p>\n<p>A\/B test your landing page so it resonates with your target audience. Ensure each product or service you sell has a unique landing page, and consider several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engagebay.com\/marketing\/landing-pages\">landing pages<\/a> for one product depending on the audience segment you\u2019re targeting.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><b>2. Build customer avatars<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Speaking of targeting an audience, before you can do that, you must have a thorough knowledge of who comprises your audience. Now is the ideal time to review customer data and issue feedback surveys to gauge your audience.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have demographic, psychographic, and geographic data, use it to create customer avatars based on the most recurring traits of your target market.
