What this tool does
search_contacts is a simple keyword search across contacts — it looks across name, email, phone number, and other indexed fields for whatever you type, the way a search box in an app would. It's the right tool when you're starting from a name, a partial email, or a phone fragment, rather than from a specific condition like “created in the last 30 days.”
For anything structured — a tag, a date range, a lead score threshold, a custom field value — use search_crm_objects instead. The two are complementary: this one is for “I remember something about this person but not a condition”; search_crm_objects is for “I know exactly what I'm filtering on.”
What you can ask
“Find the contact named Jane Doe.”
“Is there a contact with an email that starts with j.smith?”
“Look up the contact with phone number ending in 4471.”
“What are the latest notes on Jane Doe?” — search_contacts to find her, then list_object_notes.
